What Gravel Should I Use for a Driveway?
Driveways need a material that sheds water, resists rutting and stays put — which rules out most decorative stone.
Surface layer
Angular crushed gravel is the usual driveway surface because it interlocks under traffic. Rounded stone tends to shift and rut.
Base layer
A driveway built from scratch usually needs a coarser base layer beneath the surface layer. Depths vary with soil and drainage, so confirm the spec with the supplier or contractor sizing the build.
Depth and quantity
A top-up is commonly 2–3 inches. Use the gravel calculator with your driveway measurements before ordering.
Drainage and crown
A slight crown or slope keeps water from sitting and washing out the surface — a real consideration through New Brunswick freeze-thaw cycles.
