How Much Mulch Do I Need?
Mulch is straightforward: measure your beds, pick a depth, convert to cubic yards.
Coverage per cubic yard
- About 160 square feet at 2 inches deep
- About 100 square feet at 3 inches deep
- About 80 square feet at 4 inches deep
Bulk versus bagged
Bagged mulch is typically sold in 2 cubic foot bags, so a single cubic yard is roughly 13–14 bags. Beyond a few bags, bulk delivery is usually less expensive and far less work.
Don't over-mulch
Piling mulch against stems and trunks holds moisture where you don't want it. Two to three inches, kept back from the base of plants, is the usual guidance.
