How Much Topsoil Do I Need?
Topsoil quantities depend on whether you're repairing, levelling or building up an area from scratch.
Typical depths
- Overseeding and patching: 1–2 inches
- Levelling low spots: varies with the low spot
- New lawn or sod prep: often 4–6 inches
- Raised beds: the full depth of the bed
Coverage per cubic yard
- About 160 square feet at 2 inches
- About 80 square feet at 4 inches
- About 54 square feet at 6 inches
Allow for settling
Loose soil settles. For raised beds especially, order a little more than the exact calculation.
